A Festive Contribution Coaster

Christmas Eve, along the Coast. The house looked like a Christmas card, right down to the little oyster-shell tree on the mantel. The hostess was handing out eggnog daiquiris when someone offered to put on Christmas music. She smiled, tucked the remote into a drawer, and returned to the blender. The holiday spirit was already being handled.

The “kids” had disappeared into the smallest room. And by “kids,” we mean they were all in their thirties. In the freezer waited the prize from a scavenger hunt through multiple grocery stores: an elusive, limited-release seasonal ice cream.

Before a guest’s glass reached the coffee table, a coaster slid beneath it. Very festive. Very firm about the furniture.
