A Little Christmas Spirit Sweatshirt

Late November, along the Coast. I went next door for coffee and found my neighbor counting birds through the open back door. The yard held three kinds of ducks, a flock of geese, two herons, and several egrets. “I’m writing a local version of The Twelve Days of Christmas,” she explained. “I may have to add a few days.”

Then her dog charged through the doorway and made one enthusiastic lap of the yard. The bird count returned to zero. “That shortens the song,” I said. My neighbor refilled our cups. “They’ll be back.” A cool breeze came through the kitchen, and I reached for the door. “Leave it open,” she said. “We’ve waited months for weather like this.” I pulled my sweatshirt sleeves over my hands and settled in for the recount.
