Do We Know… Poe? Tee

She was back home visiting family and friends. A few companions from out of town had come along to see the South and heard about a custom T-shirt shop on the Coast. They wanted something to take home. Preferably something that required less explanation than the stories.

Then she saw the yellow plane.

She drifted away from the group, drawn toward the water as though something had caught hold of her. “Oh, my God,” she whispered to herself.

There was the number on the tail. Poe’s plane. When she was a kid living in Texas, he’d take her up for rides. Sometimes, he’d even let her fly it. She remembered the view from that little window and the considerable satisfaction of being trusted with something the adults generally kept to themselves. She hadn’t seen it since.

But what was it doing on the Coast? Poe belonged beside a mountain lake, catching fish and attending to the serious business of becoming too fat for his own good. He could make an entire afternoon disappear that way. Several salmon, too.

Her eyes moved from the plane to the open shop door. That could only mean one thing.

She hurried past her friends, suddenly quite certain where she was going. One turned to look back at the plane, still trying to catch up with the afternoon.

“Do we know… Poe?”
