The news reached the Coast: this year, a bear named Backpack had taken the honors. An excellent outcome for a very substantial bear. By the following morning, Poe had acquired a small green backpack and begun walking as though someone might ask for his photograph.

Josephine spotted him coming around the familiar bend in the river. Chonked up, bumbling along, and holding his head considerably higher than the terrain required. The backpack looked capable of carrying half of a huge sandwich. Poe looked capable of explaining where the other half had gone. A few friends called him over to the old fishing spot, and his grand entrance became an afternoon by the water. He’d come back with a new backpack. His seat was right where he’d left it.
