At a little arcade along the Coast, Ophelia was explaining why our last air-hockey game did not count as a loss. I noticed a pair of oversized boxing gloves behind the counter and offered her a shot at the title. Then I made an observation about her height.
An unnecessary observation, as it turned out.
“I’m a regular-sized person.”
She slipped on the gloves. Pink ears. Sweet little nose. The expression of someone who had finished accepting comments. I still had a considerable height advantage, which seemed worth mentioning until she glanced down at my legs.
“Tall enough for your shins.”
We went back to air hockey. For the record, she has never lost.
